Kramer (1995-2009) was my first service dog. He helped pull my wheelchair, open doors and bring things out of my reach. More importantly, he took the focus off of my dystonia and brought support and joy back to my life. Kramer was never a stranger to anyone. He loved everyone he met and he entered every space with exuberance. He had abundant joy for work and play. He helped me through my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I will always remember him by living with joy every day.
Herbie (2009-2023) was my second service dog. He loved helping with laundry, pulling my wheelchair and helping me up. He loved working and enjoyed going out for appointments or visiting friends. Herbie had a quiet gentleness about him as he worked. He was always happy to help and took his time doing things with ease. He was very gentle about bringing things and placed his head gently in my lap if he needed something. He even alerted me when my blood pressure dropped and when my intravenous line backed up a few times. I have lots of memories of joyful giggles and a wagging tail as he played with my son. I will always remember Herbie by stopping to find peace and quiet comforts in every day.
